On Monday, Apple defended its new method for scanning iCloud for illicit child sexual abuse materials, or CSAM, amid a debate over whether the technique diminishes Apple user privacy.
Apple announced last week that it begun testing a technique that uses sophisticated cryptography to detect when users upload known child pornography collections to its cloud storage service. It claims to do so without learning anything about the contents of a user’s images saved on its servers.
Apple reaffirmed on Monday that its system is more secure than those used by Google and Microsoft. Mainly because it employs both its servers and software that put on people’s iPhones via an iOS update.
Privacy campaigners and technology analysts are concerned that Apple’s new approach may be expanded in some countries through new regulations. They worry Apple will be able to screen for other types of images, such as political photos. In a document posted on its website on Sunday, Apple stated that governments could not compel it to include non-CSAM photographs in a hash list. There is a set of numbers related to known child sexual abuse images. Apple will ingrain them into to iPhones to activate the system.

Some cryptographers are concerned about what would happen if a government, such as China, passes legislation requiring the system to incorporate politically sensitive photos. Apple CEO Tim Cook previously stated that the corporation abides by the national laws in which it does business.
Companies in the United States must submit CSAM to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Or they might risk fines of up to $300,000 if they discover illicit photographs.
Apple’s reputation for protecting privacy has built over time through its actions and marketing. During the investigation of a mass shooter in 2016, Apple went to court to protect the integrity of its on-device encryption technology. However, Apple also faced substantial criticism from law enforcement officials. There were concerns about the risk of criminals going dark or utilizing privacy measures.

Unlike current systems, which run in the cloud and cannot be investigated by security experts, Apple’s strategy can inspect through its distribution in iOS. By offloading some processing to the user’s device, the business has more privacy benefits. These include locating CSAM matches without running software on Apple servers that check every photo.
Apple has also stated that it will process previously uploaded photographs to iCloud. The modifications will be implemented via an iPhone update later this year.
