Google Photos will stop offering free, unlimited storage

Google Photos plus application icon.

Google Photos is a photo-sharing and storage service developed by tech giant Apple. The service is popular around the world. However, Google Photos made a decision that could make the service less popular. It is worth mentioning that, after five years of offering unlimited free photo backups at “high quality”, the service will start charging for storage once more than 15GB on the account have been used.

People should keep in mind that, the change will take place on June 1st, 2021. Importantly, it comes with other Google Drive policy changes like counting Google Workspace documents and spreadsheets against the same cap. Interestingly, Google is also introducing a new policy of deleting data from inactive accounts that, the user did not use for at least two years.

Hopefully, all photos and documents uploaded before June 1st will not count against that 15 GB cap. Thus, every user can decide whether to continue using Google Photos or switching to another cloud storage provider for your photos. As a reminder, only photos uploaded after June 1st will begin counting against the cap.

Google Photos and users

It is worth noting that, Google already counts “original quality” photo uploads against a storage cap in Google Photos. Nevertheless, removing unlimited backup for “high quality” photos and video may create problems for the service. Google Photos will lose one of the service’s biggest selling points. It makes sense, as it was the photo service that offered free unlimited storage.

Interestingly, Pixel owners will still be able to upload high-quality photos (not original) photos for free after June 1st without those images counting against their cap. However, it is not as good as Pixel’s original deal of getting unlimited original quality. Nevertheless, it is a small bonus for the few people who buy Google’s devices.

Fortnite Might Return to iPhones and iPads

According to Google, it offers more free storage than others. A user gets 15GB instead of 5GB that Apple’s iCloud giver to users. Moreover, the tech giant also claims that 80% of its photo service users won’t hit that 15GB cap for at least three years.

Importantly, the company will send alerts as well as warnings when a user will begin to approach that cap. Moreover, the tech giant is also putting new storage management tools into Google Photos, including a tool that makes it easier to find and delete photos. People still have time to find a solution that will work for them.
