China called for a rejection of hegemonic power structures

According to the latest news, Xi Jinping Chinese President called for a rejection of hegemonic power structures in global governance. The announcement came amid deepening tensions among China and the U.S. over a widening range of issues. These include the alleged human rights abuses.

While speaking at the annual Boao Forum for Asia, the Chinese President criticized efforts by some countries to build barriers and decouple. According to him, it would harm others and benefit no one.

The Asian giant has long called for reforms of the global governance system to better reflect a more diverse range of perspectives and values from the international community.

China has also rivaled the most prominent stakeholders in world governance, particularly America. This was over a range of issues from human rights to China’s economic influence over other countries.

According to Xi, the world needs justice and not hegemony. He added that a big country should look like a big country by showing that it takes more responsibility.

Remarkably, the President did not identify any country in his statements. However, Chinese officials have referred to U.S. hegemony in public criticisms of the U.S.’s global projection of power in trade and geopolitics.

On April 16, President Joe Biden held his first face-to-face White House summit since taking office to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, in which Beijing topped the agenda.

China strengthens ties in Southeast Asia

They announced that they share serious concerns about the human rights situation in Hong Kong and China’s Xinjiang region. The U.S. has said China is perpetrating genocide against Muslim Uighurs. However, China has denied abuses.

Furthermore, Biden announced Japan and America would be jointly investing. They will partner up in areas such as 5G technology, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, genomics, and semiconductor supply chains.

The Biden administration rallies other democratic allies to strengthen their stance on China. Meanwhile, Beijing strengthens ties with its autocratic partners and economically dependent neighbors in Southeast Asia.

China’s trade practices focused on an intense tariff war between China and America under the Trump administration. The United States accused China of unfair subsidiaries that give Chinese firms an unfair advantage abroad and forced transfers of technology and intellectual property.
