Department of Justice, Google, and Largest Antitrust Case

The discussions regarding the role of tech giants in the modern world started a long time ago. Importantly, the Trump administration will expectedly sue Google on Tuesday. This is the largest antitrust case against a tech company in more than twenty years.

It is worth noting that, the Justice Department is expected to make allegations that tech giant abused competition to maintain its position in the marketplace for online search.

People should take into consideration that, the federal complaint follows a year-long antitrust probe by DOJ investigators. According to a major congressional report, Google and other tech giants enjoy the monopoly.

This report once more underlines the severity of the problem. Based on the information taken from the report Amazon mistreated third-party sellers. Another famous company Apple also abused its powers. The company’s app store fees and policies are anti-competitive.

Moreover, Facebook has sought to eliminate future rivals through targeted acquisitions.

Google and legal aspects

Interestingly, the Justice Department’s expected suit against Google is another step the U.S. government took to hold tech giants accountable for their role. As a reminder, the government decided to take action against the tech industry following that major social media platforms were manipulated by foreign election meddling efforts in 2016.

It is worth noting that, the looming case has the potential to create problems for Google’s wider advertising business. Last year, this business brought in $134.8 billion and accounted for 84% of Google’s total business.

Interestingly, Google is not alone as other tech giants could also face lawsuits of similar magnitude. Notably, officials at the Federal Trade Commission are investigating the case and the investigation is a serious challenge for Facebook.

Moreover, the pending Google suit also symbolizes the growing criticism. Tech giants are struggling to cope with a huge amount of information uploaded on social media platforms. It makes sense as it is quite hard to remove all content that violates policies and promotes hate speech for example.

Facebook and other tech giants are working hard to address such issues. Nevertheless, the sheer number of such posts makes it very hard to remove such content in a short period of time. Also, it will take a significant amount of time to win a case against Google. Furthermore, it will take years to hold other tech giants accountable as well due to the sensitive nature of such cases. Tech companies should work with authorities to cope with problems.
