Facebook Launched its Dating Service in Europe

Facebook is one of the most popular social media platforms in the world. It is worth mentioning that, Facebook made an important announcement on Thursday. It expanded its dating service to Europe. Interestingly, the purpose of the platform, known simply as “Facebook Dating” is to help users find partners thanks to their common interests such as events, groups.

People who would like to use this platform must set up a Facebook Dating profile. Moreover, once registered, the users have the opportunity to share personal “Stories” on their dating profiles. This is not the end of the story as they can also share stories from their main Facebook or Instagram accounts.

Interestingly, there is also a ‘Secret Crush” feature. Thanks to this feature, users can select up to nine Facebook friends or Instagram followers that they are interested in. Importantly, if one of those people also selects this user as their crush then a match is generated.

It is worth noting that, unlike other dating services such as Hinge, Tinder, and Bumble, the Facebook dating service is completely free to use. There is no premium offering. The social media giant made an interesting decision as usually dating service offer special features for the money.

Facebook Dating service and coronavirus pandemic

The coronavirus pandemic affecting many aspects of everyday life, and dating is not an exception. Lockdowns and social distancing measures made in-person dates difficult in countries around the world. Moreover, the pandemic is far from being over. It is hard to determine how long it would take to cope with the coronavirus pandemic.

It is worth mentioning that, Facebook is working to create a feature that will allow singles who matched on Facebook on Facebook Dating to have video chats.

As a reminder, the social media giant released the information regarding its dating service, in May 2018. Interestingly, the dating feature launched in the U.S. in September 2019, immediately sending shares in Match down 4.5%. Importantly, Match is the owner of the dating app Tinder.

At the moment, Facebook Dating is available in 52 countries in the world inducing 32 countries in Europe. Based on the information provided by the social media giant, the platform generated 1.5 billion matches across 20 countries since it launched. Facebook has the opportunity to make its dating service popular all over the world. As stated above, its dating service is free of charge and it will be easier to convince users to use this platform.
