HMD Global Oy, the exclusive licensee for Nokia-branded smartphones and tablets since 2016. Now, the company is shifting toward a robust European manufacturing and research presence. This move underscores a strategic pivot to enhance product innovation and secure a foothold in the competitive tech landscape. Especially considering its stride in the burgeoning 5G sector.

Nokia Aims to Relocate Production to Europe Amid 5G Expansion

HMD Global outsources its manufacturing to Asia, primarily through partnerships with Foxconn. However, plans are afoot to transition significant portions of their production to Europe. This decision is propelled by the objective to integrate more closely with European technological advancements and secure chains. Particularly considering the realm of 5G technologies. Collaborations with IT security firms in Europe are intended to refine software modifications and testing. That way, ensuring that the new European-manufactured devices meet the highest data privacy and security standards.

Strengthening EU Partnerships, Nokia Boosts Local R&D Efforts

The transition also responds to the European Union’s drive to boost local production within critical sectors, as highlighted by initiatives such as the European Chips Act. HMD Global’s collaboration strategy involves the public and private sectors to champion the cause of European manufacturing and R&D in the tech industry. These efforts reflect a broader commitment to align with European industrial policies that promote innovation and self-reliance in the technology sector.

Nokia Launches Three New Smartphones with Three-Day Battery Life

In line with these strategic expansions, HMD Global unveiled a trio of Nokia-branded smartphones on Saturday – the Nokia G22, C32, and C22. Each model boasts a robust three-day battery life, aligning with consumer demand for longer-lasting and reliable devices. This launch also marks a significant partnership with iFixit, a move designed to facilitate easier repair of mobile devices, thereby extending their lifespan and reducing waste – a nod towards sustainability in consumer electronics.

Nokia 3210 Revived: 4G and Modern Apps in a Classic Design

To add a nostalgic element to its product lineup, HMD Global is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the iconic Nokia 3210 by introducing an updated version. This new edition maintains the classic design, incorporating modern features like 4G connectivity, a 2.4-inch colour LCD, and contemporary apps, including YouTube Shorts.

Ben Wood, the founder of the Mobile Phone Museum in Britain, praised the revamped 3210, emphasizing that it was one of the most significant phones Nokia ever made and was cherished by many as their first mobile device. He remarked that this modern twist on a classic design during its silver jubilee year will likely attract considerable attention.
