Samsung Sold More Foldable Galaxy Devices Than Expected

Samsung Sold More Foldable Galaxy Devices Than Expected

As it turned out, people like Samsung’s foldable devices. The company shipped four times more foldables in 2021 than what it did in 2020 according to Samsung. This is in large part due to Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Flip 3.

Both of them are refined versions of their predecessors, with better software and features. But more importantly, Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Flip 3 are also notably cheaper. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is still too expensive for many customers. However, more people have the ability to buy Galaxy Flip 3 as its costs $999.

For people who owned a non-Samsung phone, more switched brands to buy a Z Flip 3 than bought the $800 Galaxy S21. The Galaxy Flip 3 served as a more attractive next phone than Samsung’s flagship and Samsung Galaxy Note 20.

Samsung and its customers

Even though the company didn’t provide sales numbers, the growth matches Counterpoint Research’s August expectations that 9 million foldables would be sold worldwide in 2021, a threefold increase over 2020. In 2020, Samsung accounted for 88% of the foldable market.

More and more people are buying foldable phones. Customers, as well as analysts, expect foldable prices to decline as manufacturers continue to redefine designs. They will also make foldable devices. Companies are trying to reduce the price of foldable phones. For example,  TCL decided not to mass produce its Project Chicago clamshell phone. Still, the company is working on foldable devices – presumably aiming to get closer to the $500 and $600 prices of its most expensive phones.

Samsung is investing a lot of money in research and development to be able to keep up with rivals. Its rival Huawei unveiled the P50 Pocket phone, which is Huawei’s first phone that folds vertically like the Galaxy Z Flip.
