Chinese president

According to state media, Chinese President Xi Jinping will give a speech On April 22 via video conference at a global leaders climate summit organized by U.S. President Joe Biden.

Joe Biden has invited 40 world leaders to a two-day virtual gathering starting on Thursday. Scientists assume the world is severely lagging in tackling the climate crisis and its heatwaves, storms, and floods.

Since taking office in January, Joe Biden has called China the most serious competitor to the U.S. Obviously, Biden maintains former President Donald Trump’s tough stance on China.

Earlier in February, Xi and Biden spoke by phone, just ahead of China’s Spring Festival.

The goal is anticipated to be at least a 50% cut by 2030

Lessening carbon emissions is one of the few areas China and the U.S. have said they could cooperate on and aligns with Xi’s announcement last year that the Asian nation intends to reach peak carbon emissions by 2030.

The goal is anticipated to be at least a 50% cut by 2030, based on 2005 levels, a target broadly backed by environment groups and the UN secretary general, António Guterres.

According to Samantha Gross, director of energy security at Brookings Institution, anything below a 50% cut will be seen as completely unacceptable to U.S. allies in Europe.

Over the weekend, Washington and Beijing jointly issued a broad statement on how the two countries would work together to cope with the climate crisis.

On April 20, Xi announced at the opening ceremony of the Boao Forum for Asia that China would support green development, particularly regarding the Belt and Road Initiative. According to critics, the infrastructure development program is part of Beijing’s attempt to boost its influence among less developed countries in the region.

Xi didn’t mention America by name in his speech. However, he said big countries should behave responsibly. Moreover, according to him, the Asian giant would not seek hegemony.
