It later culminated in a successful landing on the moon’s south polar regions on February 22. This event marked the first soft landing on the moon by a private entity and the first by an American entity since Apollo 17’s mission in December 1972.
Ingenuity Overcomes Laser Rangefinder Snag
The journey to the moon was not without its challenges. A critical issue with the lander’s laser rangefinders threatened to derail the landing. However, through a swift and innovative response, a software patch repurposed a NASA Doppler lidar payload, enabling the mission to proceed. Additionally, despite initially receiving only a weak signal from Odysseus, mission control confirmed its successful transmission from the lunar surface.
