Taiwan became the leader in the global industrial production sequence of semiconductor processing.
In the last decade, the creation of Si photonics has led to improved photonic integrated circuits. It resulted by using a semiconductor manufacture production line. This process allowed blending the advantages of multi-functional and cheaper optical signal generating techniques built inside a small chip.
After appearing such technology trends, the Ministry of Science and Technology encouraged various projects to fulfill future technology development. These funded projects include Si photonic fibre gyroscope in the Department of Photonics, National Sun Yat-sen University.
The team utilizes several new electrical and optical circuits designs in silicon photonic integration chips. It reduces the overall size of a chip while setting up a new capability level.
Tech advancements
In addition to this process, the Si photonics gyroscope has the potential for customer purposes. It can apply to autonomous cars, bioengineering, robot, and navigation. Interferometric fibre optical gyroscope is one of the essential elements for perceiving angular velocity in navigation systems, such as military, aerospace, underwater, and uncrewed vehicles. Also, the ring laser gyroscope and hemispherical resonant gyroscope are the most durable elements with the highest resolution. However, the complex structure requires delicate assembly engineering, which comes with high costs. On the other hand, it can be adapted to the mass production line, leading to the lowest price per piece.
However, the mechanical properties cause low precision from modern technologies. In the perspective of gyroscope performance, IFOG could vary in modules, depending on the structure and its assembly technologies. With the advancement of Si photonic technologies, photonics integration proposes an excellent solution for future gyroscope technologies.
Taiwan showed how to democratically tackle the pandemic and be a truly global partner using technologies. Taiwan’s commitments and actions have attracted international attention. The relationship between the U.S. and Taiwan has become stronger than ever in the past year.
