On Monday, around 200,000 people remained trapped in the besieged city of Mariupol after fighting halted evacuation operations over the weekend, and there was little evidence that hefty international penalties were stopping Moscow from continuing its invasion of Ukraine.
Japan, which relies on Russia as its fifth-largest crude oil supplier, is also negotiating with the US and European nations to block Russian oil imports. Russia’s invasion was widely denounced across the globe; it resulted in the emigration of more than 1.5 million Ukrainians and the imposition of broad Western-led sanctions aimed at damaging the Russian economy.
According to Ukrainian officials, most residents stuck in the port city of Mariupol are sleeping underground to avoid more than six days of bombardment by Russian forces; it has cut off food, water, electricity, and heating supplies. On Sunday, around half of the city’s 400,000 residents were supposed to be evacuated. However, the endeavor was postponed for a second day when a ceasefire agreement fell apart.
Sanctions Haven’t Halted the Invasion
Moscow has denied striking civilian areas and has stated that it does not want to conquer Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin indicated in a phone chat with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan that he was open to negotiation to cease the war, but only if Ukrainian soldiers stopped resisting and accepted his requests. On Sunday, the UN stated that the civilian death toll from conflicts in Ukraine since Moscow started its invasion on February 24 had risen to 364, including more than 20 children, with hundreds more injured.
After days of halting progress in their major push on the capital south from Belarus, the general command of Ukraine’s armed forces stated Russian forces were “starting to collect resources for the storming of Kyiv.” United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the US has received credible accusations of purposeful strikes on people in Ukraine and recorded them in preparation for a possible war crimes probe. Russians who perpetrate crimes against people, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, will receive a punishment.
