NASA and Nokia Will Develop a 4G Network

Companies are willing to offer new opportunities to their customers as they want to strengthen their positions in the market. Interestingly, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is a well-known independent agency. This agency is responsible for the civilian space program, aeronautics, as well as space research. It is worth mentioning that, NASA is ready to spend millions of dollars to create a 4G network on the moon.

People should take into account that, the agency wants to build a lunar base and eventually sustain a human presence on the moon. Importantly, NASA awarded $370 million to more than a dozen companies to deploy the technology on the lunar surface. Interestingly, those innovations include remote power generation, cryogenic freezing, robotics, 4G and etc.

Based on the information provided by the agency, 4G could provide more reliable, longer-distance communication than the current radio signals that operate on the moon. Moreover, this is not the end of the story, as the 4G will eventually be upgraded to 5G as in the case of the earth.

NASA and plans for the future

The agency is working hard to achieve this goal. Interestingly, Nokia’s Bell Labs will spend $14.1 million awarded by the agency on this project. As a reminder, in the past AT&T used to operate Bell Labs. It will partner with a spaceflight engineering company Intuitive Machines to build the 4G-LTE network.

Moreover, 4G will probably work better on the moon than on earth. It makes sense, as there are no trees, buildings, or TV signals to interfere with the 4G signal. Furthermore, the moon’s cellular network will be able to withstand the specific conditions that exist on the moon. For example, extreme temperature, radiation, and space’s vacuum.

Also, the 4G network will stay functional during lunar landings and launches, despite the fact that rockets significantly vibrate the moon’s surface.

According to Bell Labs, astronauts will use its wireless network for data transmission, controlling of lunar rovers, Moreover, they will use the network for real-time navigation over lunar geography and streaming of high-definition video.

Interestingly, the 4G network on earth is using giant cell towers with enormous power generators and radios. However, Bell Labs helped to create small cell technology that’s more limited in range. Nevertheless,  it is using far less power than traditional cell towers. Also, it is significantly easier to pack the necessary equipment into a rocket ship. At the moment, 5G networks are using this technology across the world.
