Star Wars: Squadrons Details Finally Released

The new Star Wars: Squadrons trailer just came out, thanks to Electronic Arts. The multiplayer space battle game is should launch on October 2.

EA revealed the game in a trailer earlier this week with the promise to add it on several Playstation consoles. In the game, players could play with friends on PS4, Xbox One, and/or on PC. The game will also support cross-play, which means users can play with friends no matter what platform they use.

EA also said they can play the whole game in VR on PS4 and PC. Details on which headsets could be used are still unsure, though.

Although the company said their customers would get a full gameplay reveal this week, they already released a sneak peek:

Multiplayer battles divide players into two teams of five. Fleet Battles mode lets players destroy an opposing flagship. Dogfights, on the other hand, will see you trying to shoot down many opponents.

When asked about the inspiration for the new addition to their universe, Motive Studios answered rather excitedly. Ian Frazier, creative director, said the team brought the excitement from Battlefront II into the new addition.

When the team was playing, they found that people were more interested in space missions in particular. Three of their developers said they felt nostalgic over 90s flight combat games, which sparked the first pitch that brought the Squadrons into its current form.

Settings, Customization, and Launch

Star Wars fans are looking forward to immersing themselves into the science fiction universe, and Motive Studios knows this. The firm’s creative director was excited to tell audiences that they can now soar across the galaxy with key favorites.

Cameos include Wedge Antilles and the Rebels’ Hera Syndulla were teased in the trailer posted Monday.

The game also offers customization options in player appearance and gameplay. It won’t add microtransactions, so as long as players move up ranks, they’ll earn more equipment for it. These include weapons, hulls, engines, and shields that could improve how a unit performs more efficiently.

This move diverts from the Star Wars: Battlefront II game, which was heavily criticized for its microtransactions.

Cosmetic items could be applied to your cockpit and ship exterior, as well as your fighter pilot.

Star Wars: Squadrons will take place after Return of the Jedi and the rebel’s victory at the Battle of Endor. The game shifts between the New Republic’s Vanguard Squadron and the Empire’s Titan Squadron’s perspectives throughout.

If players aren’t able to play with others, there’s always the single-player story. Beginning players will play as a pilot in the New Republic’s Vanguard, while others are in Empire’s Titan.

Star Wars: Squadrons takes place after the Return of the Jedi in familiar but never-before-seen settings. A notable location is the gas giant of Yavin Prime, which A New Hope only showed in the distance, along with the destroyed Galitan moon.

Whether or not everything that happens in the game is officially canon, neither EA nor Motive Studios confirmed.

Pre-orders for the game are now available for $40 USD. But EA and Origin Access subscribers can play the game for 10 hours maximum at launch for free.
